 Image of Corte Corte (Corsican Corti) in is a town and a commune in the Haute-Corse département in central Corsica, in France. It is the fourth-largest commune in Corsica (after Ajaccio, Bastia, and Porto-Vecchio), with a 1999 census population of 6,329 inhabitants. Corte is a sous-préfecture of the Haute-Corse département. Corte was the capital of the Corsican independent state during the period of Pasquale Paoli. Sites of interest include the Fortress (A citadella), the Museum of Corsica (Museu di a Corsica), and the University of Corsica (Università di Corsica). National roads lead to Ajaccio and Bastia.
